Edwardâs brother Ashley was biting the end of his pencil as he was going over some figures for a client. Being a self-employed accountant, he had to be on the ball when it came to balancing other peopleâs books, so to speak. His wife, Julia, worked part time in a bank in the city, and sometimes they would meet for lunch if their schedules matched.
The boys, Spencer and James, had broken up from school for the summer and Julia had three weeksâ holiday owing to her. Tomorrow, they would all be flying out to France for a fortnightâs vacation with his brother William and wife Theresa. So Ashley wanted to have everything in order before he left.
William and Theresa were looking forward to their holiday in Paris with family and they were all staying at the same hotel. They had closed their antiques business for two weeks and were anticipating their well-earned rest. They had travelled down from their home in New Brighton and were staying at Ashleyâs overnight, so they would be in good time for their flight from Manchester.
Edward and Margaret were not going with them, but they wanted to give their nephews some spending money and phoned Ashley, who had told them to come round that evening, and to bring Randal and Patricia with them if they wanted. After they had eaten, Edward and the family drove round to Ashleyâs house, which was in a neighbouring district.
The rift between Randal and Spencer had widened dramatically over the years and both sets of parents were very distressed at the situation. For the purpose of harmony, the two cousins had reached a reluctant, uneasy peace, more for the sake of their family ties. But Randalâs patience was running very thin.
One of these days Iâm going to see him off. He better watch his sarcastic step.
They were all sitting together in the spacious lounge, drinking and chatting away. Edward was telling them about a situation at his school, mainly some teething problems with the new geography teacher and they were laughing at his staffroom stories. Randal sipped his glass of Coke and tried to ignore Spencerâs irritating presence. He always had to work extra hard at dismissing Spencerâs double-edged intimations. It was the only way to deal with him without working himself up and consequently having to leave the room.
Heâs taking the piss. Iâve got to get rid of him sooner or later. Preferably the former.
Additionally, Patricia tried to defuse any threatening verbal detonations. She knew by the colour of Randalâs cheeks that an impending undercurrent was about to burst violently to the surface, which usually ended in the inevitable war of words.
Ashley was talking about some of the places he wished to visit in Paris when Randal heard a peculiar rumbling noise in his mind. Suddenly, a huge ball of fire wrapped itself around his uncleâs body. The noise built up into a deafening explosion of such intensity that Randal inadvertently ducked and wanted to shelter from the blast.
